Justin Long is someone I enjoy watching; he was really good in Jeepers Creepers, but Barbarian just didn’t grab me, to put it mildly. That isn’t because of the performers though. It's hard to describe without spoiling things, but Barbarian has elements reminiscent of The Hills Have Eyes, Psycho, and even Quasimodo. The issues lie in how the story was written and managed. It takes an extended period for anything substantial to happen, there are strange plot inconsistencies that don’t make sense, and the big reveal occurs too soon. What's left feels almost like a completely separate movie. There's just a repetition of what happened earlier, with minor changes, as it heads toward its unpleasant ending. Naturally, any feeling of dread or suspense established carefully in the beginning disappears as well. You can see what’s going to happen. Basically, this film seems to draw from other horror movies in a really unsuccessful way, resulting in an uneven and foreseeable experience that isn't particularly frightening or even captivating. The quality of the acting is the only thing keeping it afloat; it’s quite good. But as I have mentioned countless times, that alone isn't sufficient.
