John Chard on Bangkok Dangerous

6/10 · May 16, 2015

The Pang Brothers have adapted their earlier Asian movie for an American audience, but the outcome is uneven. The story centers on Nic Cage’s character, a hired killer who travels to Bangkok to carry out several assignments. Through narration, he explains that he operates by a specific code designed to keep him alive in his profession; however, he quickly disregards these principles and finds himself in danger. The narrative doesn't extend much beyond that. While the Pang Brothers demonstrate considerable visual flair and skill in choreographing action scenes, everything feels well-worn. Action films rarely offer anything groundbreaking; they tend to be fast-paced entertainment lacking emotional resonance to complement the violence, which is exactly what we have here. Consequently, fans of action movies searching for something fresh won’t find it with this film. Cage delivers a decent performance, portraying a tough but also vulnerable persona. His presence and the movie's visual style elevate it slightly, even though it proves to be instantly forgettable. It earns a rating of 6/10.
