It’s an enjoyable film, one I could see myself watching again, and I would suggest checking it out if you’re on the fence about it. The overall vibe of the movie brought "Booksmart" to mind, but with a greater sense of competition rather than teamwork—if that makes any sense. I'm definitely a fan of Hannah Marks, though I’m not as enthusiastic about Liana Liberato. It seemed like they should have swapped roles, and it’s not that Liberato is incapable of carrying a film; the casting just didn’t quite feel right. The movie occasionally seems to be trying to decide who's more attractive, and for me, Hannah Marks embodies the “hot new thing” better, plus she has a stronger presence. That probably explains why she takes the lead here. It was irritating to watch the characters repeatedly make those typical high school errors—acting like fools with all these choices available to them, allowing someone unpleasant to dictate their self-worth. I guess what I’m struggling with is how to connect with it as a young woman who can't manage her own desires, even when they aren't good for her. I’ve made similar regrettable decisions myself back in the day, and that’s really where my frustration comes from. The reason I’m bringing all of this up is that this feeling holds it back from being truly great, settling instead for a more average experience. It's still a decent movie with good characters, acting, and writing, but it isn’t particularly uplifting or hopeful. The conflict is social rather than the kind of action I usually enjoy, although that doesn’t mean others won't find it much more appealing.
