Rose Dugdale (played by Imogen Poots) finds herself obligated to appear before the Queen in a debutante ceremony, a condition tied to securing an Oxford University education. From a young age, she begins to resist her comfortable background; a familiar pattern where privilege fosters resentment toward those who provided it. Simultaneously, tensions escalate in Northern Ireland during the early 1970s. Following a visit to a training camp in Cuba, she returns transformed – skilled in bomb-making and embracing terrorism, seemingly driven by both intellect and principles. A scheme is formulated to steal valuable paintings by Goya, Rubens, and Vermeer from a grand estate, intending to use them as leverage for £500,000 and the release of two IRA prisoners who are refusing food in the United Kingdom. The film then unfolds as a somewhat disjointed account of how this elaborate plan was carried out and what followed. While the narrative presents an intriguing historical episode, the shifting timelines and Poots’ uneven acting contribute to a fragmented feel. There were moments where I felt left hanging while storylines were being explored, and frustratingly little is revealed about the actual person Rose Dugdale truly was. The script doesn't avoid depicting her radicalization or some of its harsher aspects, but her intense dislike of the British government remains largely without explanation. This story has the potential to be a powerful political documentary focusing on someone clearly committed to their beliefs; however, as a dramatic presentation, it fails to fully connect with the audience.
