Edward Rowe, who delivers a serviceable performance as “Martin,” portrays a man wrestling with shifts in his small fishing village that leave him feeling disconnected. His brother believes increased income can be achieved by utilizing their deceased father’s boat to ferry tourists, and the family home is now occupied by "Sandra" (Mary Woodvine) and "Tim" (Simon Shepherd), whose presence further irritates Martin. The film's visual style initially distinguishes it; for roughly thirty minutes, the black-and-white cinematography and dynamic camera work – frequently shifting between characters, scenic views, and incorporating conversations in a creative way, particularly during scenes set in places like a pool room or bar – are noteworthy. However, after the techniques employed by director Mark Jenkin become familiar, the narrative begins to follow a rather foreseeable and repetitive course. The characters feel underdeveloped, and the limited dialogue contributes to what seems like a superficial examination of small-town attitudes. Woodvine and Stacey Guthrie’s character, “Liz,” who runs a bar, function as buffers, diffusing some of Martin's mounting frustration, but ultimately this feels like a short film that has been extended beyond its ideal length. While it is an intriguing project, there were moments when it seemed it could have functioned effectively as a silent movie; still, it didn’t resonate with me in a positive way.
