_Baise-Moi_ is, without exaggeration, really bad. I recall a former housemate who was completely fixated on it, and I've never gotten what the appeal was. Even if you disregard the sex and violence, there’s not much left that’s worthwhile; it comes across as poorly made: the visuals and audio resemble an early 2000s daytime television program, with a terrible musical score and acting that doesn't quite work. The filmmaking feels indifferent at best. I viewed it on an older DVD that still has the BBFC edits, so maybe the picture quality was affected by that—but even Arrow’s efforts to improve it can’t redeem this film. The scenes of sexual violence are disturbing, primarily because of how casually they're handled. However, in the roughly 25 years since it came out, the movie’s notoriety has been eclipsed by more extreme examples – revealing _Baise-Moi_ to be just a provocation lacking substance. It seems this film was made solely to upset and challenge the censors—it isn’t thrilling, alluring, or even mildly engaging.
