Iris (played by Freya Allan) finds herself unexpectedly inheriting an old pub from her father, who she hadn’t been close to. The solicitor—Ned Dennehy, reliably unsettling—urges her to simply sell it. Instead, Iris decides to spend a night there, guided by some VHS tapes, hoping to figure out what to do. She meets "Neil" (Jeremy Irvine), a young man who proposes paying her £4,000 so he can speak with his wife in the pub’s cellar! She tells him to return the following day and invites her friend “Katie” (Ruby Barker) to stay over. Soon, she begins to think that she might be able to make a significant amount of money from this situation. Neil returns, and together they go down to the cellar with Katie. They find two chairs and a large hole in the wall, then some dirty, thin fingers as the woman who gives the film its name appears out of the shadows—and it’s quite startling! Rather than being terrified, Iris researches what's happening and believes she can manipulate events for financial gain. “Katie” isn’t so sure, and "Neil" seems to be developing a more permanent solution for himself. The characters make some remarkably foolish choices throughout the film, and some of the (limited) special effects feel like something out of "The Exorcist" from fifty years ago. However, considering it was made on a small budget, it's comparable to typical Blumhouse productions that regularly appear in cinemas. The performances are all acceptable, as is the writing; the story does have moments where it’s genuinely interesting as things unfold. I don't think I'll recall having seen it within two weeks, but I did enjoy it during those ninety minutes, especially the ending, which I found quite pleasing.
