Following a disagreement with her spouse, "Jasmin" (Marianne Sägebrecht) shows up at a roadside inn, bringing only a suitcase. The motel is managed by the spirited "Brenda" (CCH Pounder). What follows is an unusual narrative where Brenda initially resists accepting Jasmin as a guest, but eventually recognizes that she has a positive influence on the small and varied group of people living there—including her teenage daughter, a son taking piano lessons, and the mysterious "Rudi" (Jack Palance), who once worked with prominent figures in Hollywood but now simply wants Jasmin to pose for a portrait. Well, at least initially. “Jasmin” appears to have a cleansing effect on the surroundings; she even cleans up—much to Brenda’s annoyance—and her calm, approachable nature gradually softens Brenda's volatile and unpredictable demeanor, giving the film a sense of ease. It isn't boring, but it demonstrates how much good can come from simple kindness and consideration, even when encountering skeptical individuals set in their ways. There’s a pleasant rapport between the two women; Pounder keeps her energy from becoming overwhelming, and Palance contributes a subtly humorous quality to the film, resulting in something that elicits smiles rather than outright laughter, ultimately delivering a message about not making assumptions.
