Daniel Robbins and Zack Weiner’s "Bad Shabbos" is consistently funny from its opening moments and maintains that energy throughout. The story centers on a Jewish family hosting their son’s girlfriend’s parents for Shabbat dinner – a first encounter of sorts. What unfolds is dark comedy, handled skillfully with precise timing and a willingness to fully embrace the unusual concept. The film draws heavily on New York City's Jewish culture, which likely contributed to its popularity at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, although it seems to have broader appeal than just that area. It received recognition in Cordillera and Wisconsin as well. The jokes are particular to a certain experience but don’t feel like they exclude anyone. David Paymer and Cliff "Method Man" Smith give excellent performances, holding the film together along with a cast where everyone demonstrates strong comedic skills. Jon Bass's portrayal of the adolescent character fixated on the IDF is a skillfully crafted mix of unsettling and ridiculous. It’s best experienced alongside kosher wine and shared with loved ones—or even people you don’t know who are comfortable laughing at an extremely awkward family gathering.
