I’m not convinced that being completely truthful is always ideal, but I suspect this sentimental story could have unfolded more easily for Dorothy (Sally Eilers) and Eddie (James Dunn), particularly for him, had they been more direct with one another from the start. She seems to believe all men are essentially exploitative and irresponsible; he feels women are frivolous shoppers. Nevertheless, despite these reservations, and because he shows her a similar lack of attention that she displays toward him, they begin to develop feelings for each other. Her brother is overbearing and difficult to deal with, so they devise a scheme to get her married and free from his influence. Soon after, with a baby on the way, he finds himself unemployed, which leads to drastic actions—all set against a backdrop of doubt and suspicion! There were moments when I felt like shaking some sense into these characters, and that seemed to indicate they were all performing adequately. Dunn is quite good, particularly as the film continues and his character's inability to be honest and less judgmental only compounds his difficulties. It takes a while to find its footing, but once their relationship dynamic becomes clear, it’s a fairly pleasant exploration of human foolishness and the expectation that men should be the primary earners—and it’s worth ninety minutes, although perhaps not if you're on your way to a hospital maternity unit.
