I’ve never been much of a Michael Bay person, but I always had a fondness for Will Smith, and Jennifer Lawrence was just familiar to me from Def Comedy Jam, so I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect going in... It was the era of 90s Will Smith, when he was purely entertaining, so I decided to check it out. The impressive thing is that it works well as a straightforward action-comedy on its own merits; ultimately, it proved to be a genuinely good movie reminiscent of those beloved 80s buddy cop films. But then it subtly pokes fun at and satirizes Miami Vice throughout the film, and does so without resorting to something obvious like a Scary Movie parody. It finds ways to deliver those jabs while still remaining a solid film in its own right, which, as far as I’m concerned, pushes it well beyond being simply brilliant.
