The movie presents the world from the viewpoint of a man with a childlike nature who has lived his entire life confined to a dismal house, unaware of and fearful of what lies beyond, entirely dependent on his mother, who both physically abuses and is intimate with him. He’s then compelled into the outside world by the reappearance of his father, who seems to travel frequently and wants to reclaim his position in the home. Bubby gradually comes to understand that the reality of the external world differs greatly from what he was led to believe, initiating a journey of exploration. The film allows us to experience a (somewhat peculiar) city through Bubby’s innocent perspective, and it's this feeling of wonder and discovery that truly shapes the movie. However, Bubby isn’t starting with a blank mind; his history is deeply troubled, which remains evident in how his character develops. Consequently, he experiences frustration and anger alongside moments of joy and excitement. The performances are exceptional, genuinely so. It's far beyond something like Forest Gump—not to criticize that film—this feels more like raw documentary footage. The narrative isn’t particularly complex; it essentially follows Bubby’s progression from one place to another, encompassing every point in between. He discovers affection and realizes its significance. There are a few profoundly moving moments that feel genuinely lovely and, as far as I can tell, unscripted. It's quite philosophical and actively promotes an inquisitive and questioning mindset throughout several scenes. I consider it an extraordinary work of art, filled with numerous memorable sequences and some that offer experiences unlike anything I’ve encountered before.
