The film “Backlash,” released in 1956, presents a visually striking Western landscape set in southern Arizona, following a man and a woman—played by Richard Widmark and Donna Reed—as they search for the last person alive from an Apache massacre who also has possession of some stolen money (John McIntire). The movie includes familiar elements of the genre: gun battles, stagecoaches, ghostly Indian raids, a gruff cavalry officer (Barton MacLane), bars, and a cocky young gunman (William Campbell). It’s amusing to watch Harry Morgan, who isn't particularly large, portray a believable gunslinger; skill and courage are what matter when you can handle a pistol. However, the film suffers from predictable Western tropes and plot devices that feel dated, such as the lead character striking the woman he’s interested in, yet she finds herself drawn to him. Despite this, those who enjoy 1950s Westerns like “Hangman’s Knot,” “Gun Fury,” “Garden of Evil,” “The Last Wagon,” and “The Law and Jake Wade” may find some enjoyment here; it simply isn't among the best examples of that era. Running just over an hour, at 1 hour and 24 minutes, "Backlash" was filmed in southern Arizona, utilizing Old Tucson as a location, with additional scenes shot at Universal Studios in Southern California, along with Sherman Oaks, Benedict Canyon, and Beverly Hills.
