John Chard on Back to the Future Part II

8/10 · Jul 8, 2019

You have to move ahead in time to protect what’s already happened, and go back to change things that haven't occurred yet. Yikes! Back to the Future Part II finds Marty & Jennifer being pressured by Doc into a trip forward in time to fix problems with the future. But Biff is still around and sees a chance for a lot of money; which he takes advantage of. So our three time-traveling heroes need to find a way back to the past to stop Biff from altering history. The huge, and well-earned, success of Back To The Future meant that a sequel was inevitable. So, taking charge of the situation, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gray created not only a sequel, but a whole series of three films, with part two acting as a kind of temporary story leading up to the final installment a year later. There’s no question about it; part two initially feels like a complicated puzzle, one that had me watching it several times when I was younger just trying to figure out the clever, silly, but complex plot. I've come to really appreciate part two as I've gotten older, with each viewing offering something new. Directed with great attention by Zemeckis, the film moves so quickly there’s barely time to process what’s happening. But it does make sense if you think about it carefully, and as we jump from one impressive scene to another, you notice a dark feeling underneath all the fun. The filmmakers present two visions of the future: one is bright and full of 80s nostalgia, but also shows how much it’s influenced by consumerism and technology that isn't always reliable; the other is driven by greed and feels almost controlled, which makes you think about things in a clever way. And then, just to remind us that there was once a time of innocence and hope, they take us back to 1955; at the same time skillfully repeating the ending of part one while adding in the story from part two! Pretty smart, huh? The actors who return are all very good {Michael J. Fox, Thomas F. Wilson & Christopher Lloyd}, while Elisabeth Shue confidently takes on the role of Jennifer after Claudia Wells {Jennifer in part one} got sick and couldn't continue. Alan Silvestri’s music still has a powerful impact, and the special effects team again do an excellent job {it looks amazing in HD}. It can now be seen as connecting two better movies, that's for sure, but I compare it to Spielberg's Temple Of Doom—darker than the more popular films in a series; but one that’s still enjoyable. It might feel like a fast-paced and confusing mix of jokes at times, but because of all its references and subtle observations, this is one of the best movies to bridge two others. Enjoy it. 8/10
