Babylon revels in excess and portrays an era unlike any other, managing to be both distinctive and captivating. The story appears simple at first glance, tracking three central characters as they pursue success within the evolving film industry. However, beneath the surface lies a deeper theme—an acceptance of mortality and obsolescence—that resonates universally. The characters’ aspirations for stardom are swiftly dashed by Hollywood's harsh realities and competitive environment. This is contrasted with Brad Pitt’s character, who is already experiencing a career decline and desperately clinging to what he has left. These narrative arcs felt remarkably genuine and exposed vulnerabilities that I found very engaging. The acting was superb across the board, which is to be expected given the impressive cast featuring Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt. Diego Calva proved to be a standout; his performance was exceptional and frequently commanded attention in scenes with both Robbie and Pitt. He emerges as the film’s central figure and carries that responsibility effectively. I appreciated nearly every element of the movie, although some sequences near the conclusion seemed to lose their way for Chazelle. They felt exaggerated and somewhat jarring within the otherwise relatively realistic narrative. While tension is present, it doesn't quite align with the tone. This entire storyline could have been significantly trimmed, which would have helped shorten the film’s considerable length. Despite its duration, the pacing kept me engaged throughout, so I didn’t notice how long it was. It proved to be a genuine pleasure to watch, and it’s unfortunate that the promotional campaign was so disorganized because this movie deserves an audience.
