Adapted from a Karen Blixen story, Babette’s Feast presents a touching narrative centered on kindness in 19th-century Denmark. The film begins by introducing Martine and Philippa, the daughters of an engaging religious leader living in a small village in Jutland. Committed to their father's mission, they decline proposals from both a Danish officer and a French musician. Years pass, and the musician arranges for Babette, a person fleeing the violence following the Paris Commune, to be sent to them so she can find refuge and work as a domestic. After winning a lottery, Babette chooses to prepare a large meal for those who employ her, though nobody anticipates the extent of sacrifice involved. Babette’s Feast is reasonably enjoyable, and it offers some insight into how plain and difficult daily existence was in Jutland during that period. The descriptions of the food are likely to make your mouth water and might even inspire you to consult a French cookbook, and without question the conclusion will elicit an emotional response, even though its presentation feels somewhat awkward. Otherwise, the performances aren't particularly remarkable, and the humor is fairly straightforward—the same gag appears on two separate occasions. A critic once suggested that this film doesn’t strive for anything beyond what you might see on television, and I am inclined to concur with that assessment.
