It's refreshing to see more films like "Babes," a comedy centered on women that doesn’t shy away from anything. Pamela Adlon directed this film, which Ilana Glazer and Josh Rabinowitz wrote together; it offers an extremely funny perspective on pregnancy, motherhood, and the connections between women. The humor is blunt, often vulgar, and completely unapologetic, making it difficult not to laugh at the ridiculousness of situations even when they become quite uncomfortable. Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau), who have been friends since childhood, are experiencing very different phases in their lives. Eden is single and determined to become a mother, choosing to proceed alone after a brief encounter leaves her pregnant. Meanwhile, Dawn is trying to balance motherhood, work, and the constant tiredness that comes with it. Their relationship faces challenges when Eden’s choice to have a baby by herself unexpectedly alters their friendship. You don't need to be a parent to appreciate the humor in this film; its themes are surprisingly broad. The dialogue contains many inappropriate jokes and quick remarks, from frequent use of profanity to constant references to bodily functions. It is frank, authentic, and certainly not suitable for those easily offended. However, beneath all the vulgarity and awkwardness lies a touching portrayal of a long-standing friendship that’s as imperfect as it is strong. Eden and Dawn share a connection built on love, encouragement, and some truly questionable choices—like using mushrooms to deal with pregnancy issues. What's particularly noteworthy is how the film examines the intricacies of female friendships and motherhood with an unexpected gentleness. These women offer each other considerable support, even when things become chaotic. Dawn’s experience as a mother feels exhausting yet familiar, and Eden’s decision to pursue single motherhood on her own terms is encouraging, despite occasionally feeling exaggerated. The movie conveys a meaningful point about how family isn't necessarily defined by genetics but more importantly by the people who remain loyal through good times and bad. “Babes” is an unusual comedy with a lot of heart; it’s about accepting imperfections and embracing life’s chaos.
