Dawn (played by Michelle Buteau) finds herself expecting a baby while married to the meticulously groomed Marty (Hasan Minhaj). Her close friend Eden (Ilana Glazer) desperately wants a child but hasn't found a donor yet. Things shift when Dawn meets Claude (Stephan James) on a train, and believing she’s protected from pregnancy, they have an encounter. She develops feelings for him, but he vanishes without explanation, which she dismisses as just another experience. Several months later, she receives unexpected news, leading to events that put her friendship with Eden under considerable strain. The storyline feels entirely familiar, especially after a clumsy opening stretch featuring exaggerated performances and a scene where a waiter expresses concern about leaking amniotic fluid – labeling the woman involved a “woman hater.” This sets the stage for what turns out to be an immature comedy effort. It unfolds like disconnected segments of a forgettable sitcom punctuated by Glazer’s narrative, which revisits an outdated girl-power theme that ceased being amusing decades ago. I remained indifferent to whether their friendship would reconcile, as there's no attempt at character development, and it’s not surprising Claude exited the story so quickly. I generally dislike these buddy comedies that disrupt a seemingly stable relationship only to try and repair it for an ending that is predictable from the start, and this one feels like another mass-produced product lacking any spark of originality.
