I’ve always felt that disaster films are a kind of "guilty pleasure," and I believe every film type has both excellent and terrible examples that deserve exposure. It's common for people to dismiss less successful movies, but those films actually help us value the really good ones. *Awake* doesn’t fall into either category, although it presents an interesting concept that wasn’t fully realized. Gina Rodriguez, known for her role in *Kajillionaire*, delivers a convincing performance as the concerned mother, but even strong acting can only sustain a movie so far. The script by Joseph Raso and Mark Raso fails to develop this unusual "end-of-the-world" scenario in an engaging or unexpected way, instead relying on familiar plot elements and foreseeable results. Even with its brief length, the film suffers from some pacing problems that make it feel longer than necessary. Like most movies of this type, you have to overlook certain questionable choices and occurrences just to avoid getting bogged down in logical inconsistencies. While it’s somewhat enjoyable because of the genre itself, ultimately it feels disappointing when considering how intriguing the initial idea was. Rating: C-
