It’s pretty awful – though thankfully not a complete disaster. The setting is Antarctica, where an expedition is poised to discover a battlefield for Aliens and Predators. “Whoever wins, we lose!” was the promotional line for Paul W. S. Anderson's prequel (?) connecting two hugely popular series. It seems he didn’t realize that many moviegoers would feel like they wasted their money after seeing this oddly assembled film. Of course, it was unrealistic to expect a movie to match the quality of the best installments in either franchise (Alien, Aliens & Predator), but fans are still entitled to hope for respectful adherence to the established style. We want some development of the characters, we anticipate a team working well together, and we certainly want the antagonists to remain menacing. Despite its flaws, it isn’t entirely without merit. Even as Anderson rushes into his trademark sequence of humans trapped in a blood-soaked, box-like environment, there's just enough backstory and suspense to keep you somewhat engaged. Actually, when everything goes wrong and Xenomorphs, Pred-Rastas, and humans are all lined up for destruction, it’s genuinely thrilling. The pyramid/cube/maze design is also quite impressive. However, the positive aspects quickly disappear as the movie shifts towards a more juvenile tone, with gore replaced by something resembling strawberry jelly, culminating in an event involving our “heroine” that feels so awkward I wonder if Anderson has trouble sleeping. It's clear that Anderson cares about both franchises and didn’t intend to create something terrible. But he’s produced a very mediocre film, benefiting from a decent central portion and the fact that it isn’t as bad as the chaotic mess that was AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem in 2007. 5/10
