The question of how the remaining heroes could possibly bring back everyone who disappeared felt like a major hurdle going in—my wife and I talked about it beforehand. It seemed like the solution would have to involve either magic or some kind of manipulation of time, and what they did ended up feeling similar to certain plot twists you’d find in "Back to the Future II." “Endgame” kicks off with a powerful depiction of the sudden disappearance of half of all life in the Universe. The pacing does slow down noticeably around the sixty-minute mark, but it recovers as several groups work to obtain the Infinity Stones so they might be able to undo the events from the previous movie. The story inevitably builds toward a large-scale confrontation near the end, which I personally found underwhelming. The ending also felt extended and somewhat drawn out. Despite that, there are many enjoyable moments scattered throughout, like the initial scene, Thanos’s unexpected appearance, Thor's physical transformation, and the emotional fight between Black Widow and Hawkeye on the edge of a cliff, among other things. However, having so many main characters ultimately works against the film because it struggles to focus on any individual or pair for an extended period. Captain Marvel felt underdeveloped and uninteresting. And at 3 hours and 1 minute, the movie is definitely too long. GRADE: B/B-
