It's rare these days for a film to convince me to leave my house and go to a movie theater. I usually prefer waiting until films are available on disc, especially Ultra HD Blu-ray, to watch them at home. This weekend, however, I took my kids to see Avengers: Endgame. I have to admit, it exceeded my expectations, even by quite a bit. I was worried that Marvel’s progressive crowd would use this as an opportunity to completely reshape the entire universe according to their own ideas. Like how they utterly destroyed both professor Xavier and Wolverine in Logan—a truly terrible movie. Fortunately, that didn't really happen. Perhaps the financial struggles of their progressive comics and Disney cutting back on the most extreme elements within Marvel, those who don’t seem to grasp that superhero films are meant for entertainment rather than a platform for personal agendas, is starting to have an effect. It was genuinely a good movie with plenty of action sequences, some humor, and, naturally, tons of special effects. The story even made a degree of sense, at least within the context of a Marvel film, despite the use of time travel. The movie begins in a rather dark and somber tone, which I suppose was to be expected. It became more upbeat as it progressed, and the ending… well, it was mostly satisfying to me. I wasn’t particularly fond of the “new” Hulk, though I did grow to like him somewhat during the film. As for Thor? The less said about him, the better. The rest of the group seemed to be in good form, and I'm glad we didn’t have to endure too many of Quill’s usual antics; I really dislike that character. I was pleasantly surprised by the massive and impressive battle toward the end. I thought they would simply undo Thanos’ actions and call it a day, but instead, we got another huge confrontation with nearly everyone involved. The action and effects were truly spectacular. Of course, there were some silly plot holes—as is always the case when writers use time travel. One obvious example: knowing that they only had enough Pym particles for one trip per person, why didn’t they go back in time to get more first? Especially since they later did exactly that. Also, Captain Marvel (sporting a new progressive hairstyle) flies through a barrage of fire, blasts through Thanos’ ship as if it were nothing, and then struggles against Thanos himself? There was some silliness like this scattered throughout the film, but not enough to bother me too much. There were a few character deaths that saddened me, and I think at least one felt unnecessary and probably driven by an agenda. I also strongly disliked what they did with Captain America at the end; he’s never been my favorite character, so I don't care about his fate, but that overly sentimental scene where he passes his shield to a “politically correct” individual was completely pointless. It seemed intended to appease the Marvel progressive crowd. Ultimately, I was thoroughly entertained by this movie. It had all the good elements: genuine superheroes, action, special effects, and not too much of the nonsense that’s been coming from Marvel in recent years.
