The sprawling Marvel story, unfolding over more than ten years, has been leading to this confrontation with the formidable Thanos (Josh Brolin). “Avengers: Infinity War” prepared audiences for what was hoped would be a fulfilling end; “Avengers: End Game,” and it’s finally here. The movie begins shortly after the events of the previous film, and the Avengers are grappling with the consequences of Thanos' actions. The group is understandably split between seeking retribution, attempting to correct what happened, and simply wanting to move on with their lives. As time goes by and they struggle to come to terms with reality, an unexpected figure reappears, bringing with them a new strategy for setting things right. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) initially expresses doubt but eventually embraces the potential of the idea, thanks to a scientific advancement that makes it feasible. Motivated by this prospect, Tony initiates an intricate plan intended to give the team a chance to rectify their situation and defeat Thanos permanently. What follows is a lengthy and occasionally sentimental undertaking where different members of the team work together to gather what’s needed for the plan, believing they have only one opportunity to succeed. The film can be viewed as essentially three separate parts combined into one. The first part involves revisiting and expanding on their predicament and formulating a strategy. The second act is primarily a heist sequence where action and humor are mixed with some heartfelt moments. This all culminates in the final act, which features extensive special effects and brings together the large cast to battle evil forces in an effort to save the Universe. The film’s scope and duration are considerable, exceeding three hours, but it is so packed with content that the time passes quickly, making it hard to believe so much has transpired. It's also challenging to review because detailing aspects of the story risks spoiling surprises for fans. My only real concern, though it was slight, was that it took a while for the action to begin, but at least there was plenty to hold your attention in the meantime. As this chapter of the Marvel Film Universe concludes and preparations are made for the next five years, “Avengers: End Game” provides a satisfying resolution to the long-running saga, incorporating elements from many previous Marvel films into an entertaining story that showcases all the qualities that have contributed to the series’ widespread popularity. 4.5 stars out of 5
