I feel like I missed something important going into this movie. While there’s clearly an angle about how humans damage the environment, mostly it plays out as a pretty typical action-romance storyline, and its importance comes from the fact that it's such a technically impressive piece of work. Sam Worthington portrays "Jake," a soldier who can’t walk and is asked to help with a project on another planet. To encourage him, officials promise to give him an operation to regain his ability to move if he uses special equipment to go undercover among the inhabitants of “Pandora.” As he spends more time discovering this vibrant new world, he starts to become part of their culture and their stunning surroundings. His feelings for "Neytiri" (Zoe Saldana) and his growing understanding of what his assignment really involves lead him into a major clash with the aggressively militaristic "Quaritch" (Stephen Lang). The film focuses on how companies prioritize profits over everything else, showing a terrible lack of respect for both the natural world and the native people. Despite some heartfelt moments, it’s held back by an underwhelming cast, dialogue that occasionally feels preachy, and yes, its considerable length. It's visually remarkable; the combination of live-action footage and animation is exceptional, but the story itself feels a little thin.
