It’s a movie experience, but unlike anything we’ve seen before. After more than twelve years of development in James Cameron's mind, the film finally appeared in theaters late in 2009. With an enormous budget, Avatar quickly earned massive amounts worldwide—and that doesn't even include sales of DVDs and Blu-rays. The movie, along with all its technical innovations, is a truly monumental moment in cinema history. Shown in both 2D and 3D (and possibly other formats I’m forgetting), Cameron and his team used every available technology to create what has become the ultimate crowd-pleasing spectacle. It's disappointing then that beyond the visual effects, the film lacks depth, much like this review will probably end up being. There’s no denying it—this is a treat for both eyes and ears; the smallest details are impressive, and the colors practically leap from every frame. However, in their rush to create such beauty, they neglected to develop the writing. The plot is incredibly simplistic. Even Cameron's messages now feel dated. Do we really need another lecture about environmental destruction? Or a blunt reminder of American interference in a place where intentions are questionable at best? Probably not. And some of the dialogue is shockingly bad—it sounds like something overheard on a playground during a game of tag or pretend war. It also feels familiar, reminiscent of other films with stronger stories, like Dances With Wolves. It’s as if Cameron decided that narrative wasn't as important as having expensive special effects. He resembles a modern William Castle, only with far more money to spend. The acting is acceptable; Zoe Saldana brings a captivating mix of strength and sensuality to her role as the blue alien Neytiri, Sam Worthington keeps the human elements from sinking entirely, and Sigourney Weaver is reliably professional. Ironically, in a film so dazzling in 2D and 3D, the characters are all rather flat. Stephen Lang’s Colonel is a prime example; he's so tough and militaristic that he seems destined for Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming action movie The Expendables. It received nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, winning three: Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction—those were all well-deserved recognitions. They also say everything you need to know about Cameron's massive production. 5/10
