The three stars I gave this film are mostly because of the visuals, the special effects, and the action sequences; otherwise, it’s just not very good. A significant portion feels like a repeat of the second film. They introduce the Ash People, but beyond that, much of what happens is strikingly similar. We find ourselves back in a situation where the RDA is after Pandora's versions of whales, and these “whalers’” behavior is so exaggerated and unbelievable that it really detracts from the experience. It’s the familiar trope of big corporations being evil, taken to an extreme. That kind of thing feels tired, Hollywood. They also brought back characters I had hoped were gone—the colonel, a clueless manager, and especially that irritating “whaler.” They're all just unpleasant and should have been left out as far as I’m concerned; it seems like a lack of creativity to not introduce some fresh villains. There was one new character, the queen of the Ash People. She was honestly the only remotely interesting person in the whole movie, with a bit of a *Mad Max* feel about her. The main characters, Jake and Neytiri, were mostly irritating. Jake especially seemed to lack any charm and didn’t come across as heroic at all. The scene where he even considered killing an innocent person to "protect" the planet—a completely fabricated excuse—really made it impossible for me to see him as a hero. The constant attempts to appease, hide, and avoid conflict—from Jake, from other characters, and from the creatures of Pandora—was frustrating in the previous film, and that frustration continued here. Finally, the climactic battle where the two tribes initially easily overpower the RDA, only to be completely defeated moments later when the Ash People showed up, felt rushed. Then they recycled an idea already used in the first movie, having the planet's wildlife suddenly intervene and resolve everything. It could have been exciting if they had awakened some massive predator we’d never seen before, but a few squids appearing? Not impressive. As I said, what made this film enjoyable for me were the scenery, special effects, and action. It is undeniably beautiful to look at. The story itself, however, felt lazy, occasionally annoying, and ultimately just average.
