Avalanche Express is an unsuccessful combination of political intrigue and disaster film elements, and also marks a regrettable conclusion to the professional lives of Robert Shaw (known for Jaws and The Sting) and Mark Robson (credited with The Seventh Victim and Bedlam). Tragically, both individuals passed away during filming. The story revolves around Shaw’s character, Marenkov, who is defecting to the West while trying to dismantle his country's biological weapons program—essentially positioning himself as a target to expose those involved. He's under the protection of Lee Marvin’s CIA operative Harry Wargrave and his team. The narrative follows a train journeying through snowy mountains as they attempt to avoid an avalanche and evade suspicious individuals who want to sabotage their plans. There is considerable dialogue, and numerous actors appear briefly without leaving any lasting impression. The action sequences, though infrequent, are poorly executed, and the dubbing of Shaw’s voice only adds to the film's overall sense of disappointment. Jack Cardiff’s cinematography is sharp and worthy of a stronger movie; even with inconsistent special effects model work, there’s a certain charm that distracts from the lackluster script. Ultimately, it's a tedious and disappointing film, really suitable only for those who want to say they’ve seen something featuring Marvin or Shaw. 3.5/10
