It’s remarkable how Ingmar Bergman manages to combine truly impressive acting from Liv Ullmann as "Eva," grappling with her mother "Charlotte"’s persistent back pain (played by Ingrid Bergman), into a drama of considerable strength and impact. The connection between them has deteriorated over time, largely because the concert pianist mother was forced to make numerous sacrifices—and decisions—that had consequences for their family. When she makes an unplanned visit to see her daughter, they share a moment at the piano, which triggers a release of long-held blame, accusations, and bitterness – although there is also some affection present – and we are led through their shared history. Complicating this already emotionally charged situation, "Charlotte" learns that her other daughter, "Helena," portrayed with striking realism by Lena Nyman—who struggles with serious mental health issues—is being looked after by her sister, bringing even more painful memories to the surface. Fundamentally a story centered on the mother and daughter, it explores a wide range of emotions, and while there are times when you might feel that the situations are somewhat excessively bleak, the intimate camera work and affecting dialogue create a compelling look at human goals, values, and love. Was it an enjoyable experience? Probably not—but it was certainly captivating.
