John Chard on Atlantis: The Lost Continent

6/10 · Nov 14, 2015

This is a George Pal production from a period when he was experimenting with fantasy-adventure films, incorporating elements of animation and science into his stories. *Atlantis, the Lost Continent* isn't a great movie, but it can be enjoyable if you have an understanding of what to anticipate from this type of film. The story centers on a Greek fisherman who is tasked with returning an Atlantean princess to the legendary city of Atlantis. He succeeds in his mission, only to regret it because he finds himself unwelcome and learns that Atlantis may soon cease to exist. The initial scenes are rough, marked by amateurish acting and noticeably low-budget visuals. However, things improve considerably once the action moves to Atlantis itself, which features a collection of unusual characters and bizarre religious practices mixed with peculiar science. The film is visually vibrant, although the special effects vary greatly in quality—as does the script, likely due to studio meddling and writers' strikes that hampered Pal’s vision. It feels more like a "Z" grade movie than a standard “B” movie, as others have observed, resembling an inexpensive Roman adventure disguised with a mythical setting. Nevertheless, it provides a reasonably pleasant viewing experience, thanks to some well-executed action sequences and a quick-paced ending. The film earns a 6/10.
