This really is a masterpiece of low-budget fantasy films. I truly mean it; however, if you’re not into this kind of obscure, cheaply made monster movie—and I can't imagine why you would be watching it—then it probably deserves around a 4 or 5 out of 10 at best. But for me, it represents something unique, bringing back fond memories from my childhood that have stuck with me. It’s the sort of film where I was completely absorbed as a kid, full of wonder while Doug McClure and Peter Cushing dug beneath the Earth to fight all sorts of creatures and beings less than human. And let's be honest, now that we're adults, we can certainly appreciate Caroline Munro and her… well, you know. My older brother always wanted to see this one at the movie theater! Sure, the special effects are terrible—you’ve got people in costumes, strings attached to monster puppets, and exploding rubber creatures—but it’s all quite entertaining. And yes, Cushing and a rather overweight McClure (sporting bell-bottom trousers) seem genuinely captivated by the evil Meyhas at the film's center. But that doesn’t really matter; with its wild, awkward style and vibrant colors, *At the Earth’s Core* is a reminder of an earlier era, before Industrial Light & Magic, when kids like me would line up to see films just as silly and enjoyable. It gets an 8/10 from me.
