It’s a really good, small-scale film focusing on the later years of a remarkably inventive but imperfect individual. Willem Dafoe gives a believable portrayal of Vincent van Gogh – he manages to capture both the artistic brilliance and the volatile nature of this gifted painter, even bearing a slight physical similarity. Rupert Friend is also effective as his brother Theo, who finds himself increasingly burdened; Oscar Isaac provides a solid performance as Paul Gauguin, whose connection with van Gogh develops into a strained and rivalrous dynamic. Julian Schnabel should be pleased with this personal and affecting representation that uses dialogue sparingly and features outstanding camerawork.
