I have to say right away that I found myself dismissing the frequent overhead shots of Van Gogh simply walking—walking, and then more walking—several times throughout the film. Some of the scenes lingered longer than necessary, although I suspect there was an intention behind them. I appreciate films that push boundaries or present ideas in unconventional ways, but it shouldn't feel condescending. I remained engaged enough to finish watching, though we didn’t watch it straight through; instead, we viewed portions and then returned to it later the same day. The shaky camera style that some viewers have mentioned didn’t register with me, and even as someone who strives for authentic dialogue in my own writing, I wasn't bothered by the exchanges here that others found problematic. With one exception: the repeated lines they use to illustrate Van Gogh’s mental instability. It just didn’t strike me as particularly effective, and a more delicate approach might have been less noticeable. The film draws from a recent biography proposing a different interpretation of the artist's final years. There’s no real way to confirm whether this new perspective is accurate, but it certainly provokes some reflection. And having your thoughts challenged isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
