The film’s final twenty minutes offer some energy, but for the most part it feels quite slow, detailing "Brad" (Sean Penn)’s admiration for his criminal father, “Dad Brad” (Christopher Walken), and his desire to copy what he perceives as a desirable existence. An opportunity arises when the elder man consents to devise a robbery for his son to carry out; however, things quickly fall apart, revealing just how ruthless the older man can be when protecting himself. Much of the movie seems designed simply to allow Penn to appear shirtless and display his physique, accompanied by repeated versions of Madonna's "Live to Tell." The female characters—Mary Stuart Masterson’s “Terry” and Millie Perkins’s “Julie”—have a minimal effect on what feels like a competition among the men in the Penn family (his brother Chris is also present as his younger sibling "Tommy"), and while Walken conveys a trace of danger as events unfold, it's not enough to compensate for the story's shortcomings. By the end, I found myself completely uninterested in this recurring narrative about a broken-down family with a lack of intelligence. The film draws inspiration from an actual Philadelphia family, and perhaps that notoriety is what keeps it from being entirely forgotten. Neither the script nor Penn’s somewhat aggressive demeanor or his John Wayne-like gait are sufficient to make it truly stand out.
