A peculiar, amusing, and somewhat disturbing film. Amicus Productions presents this horror collection, directed by Roy Ward Baker and penned by Robert Bloch, the writer behind "Psycho." The narrative follows Robert Powell’s Dr. Martin as he searches for work. Upon arriving at the impressive but ominous Asylum (New Lodge, Winkfield, Berkshire, England), he must interview four patients on the upper floor to demonstrate his suitability for the role. As is typical of anthology horror films, the stories have varying degrees of merit, though the consistent strength lies in the pervasive atmosphere and sense of mystery. Douglas Gamley’s powerful arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky's music enhances this feeling. ‘Frozen Fear’ involves a murdered wife returning to get even with her husband and his mistress—a rather unsettling detail given she was cut into pieces. ‘The Weird Taylor’ casts Peter Cushing as a father consumed by grief who is willing to go to any length to resurrect his deceased son. ‘Lucy Comes to Stay’ includes Charlotte Rampling and Britt Ekland in a deadly reimagining of the "imaginary friend" concept. ‘Manikins of Horror,’ the final segment, features Herbert Lom as a creator of small robotic dolls with disturbingly lifelike faces. These segments all culminate in a satisfying conclusion that offers a clever surprise. It’s well-made; the direction and writing flow smoothly, and there are some truly unsettling scenes. Maybe not ideal if you're seeking intense scares for Halloween, but it delivers a high standard of genre entertainment. 7/10
