Wes Anderson has gathered a strong ensemble cast, yet I have to say the experience felt very much like prioritizing aesthetics over what it was trying to convey. The narrative unfolds in a small Nevada town where a meteorite landed long ago. Annually, the town recognizes young people who’ve made significant contributions to science, bringing them and their families together for a ceremony led by "Gen. Gibson" (Jeffrey Wright). The "Steenbeck" family is central to this, with father and renowned photographer "Augie" (Jason Schwartzman) and his awkward son "Woodrow" (Jake Ryan), whose car trouble leads to the arrival of Woodrow’s grandfather "Stanley" (Tom Hanks) in a Cadillac. He comes to observe this collection of peculiar individuals residing in small cabins that resembled one of the experimental communities constructed near nuclear testing areas. “Augie” develops an interest in his attractive neighbor, "Midge" (Scarlett Johansson), and his son becomes fond of her daughter "Dinah" (Grace Edwards). As these relationships develop in a very unusual way, we meet some of the other odd people who live there – which left me feeling rather indifferent. The cinematography is striking, close-up, and almost invasive, with frequent sweeping shots and panoramic views, and the writing has moments of cleverness; however, I left the cinema after seeing it twice questioning whether it was all just hype. It wasn't that I felt like I’d overlooked something; it seemed there simply wasn't anything substantial to grasp onto. The plot—to the extent that one exists—felt almost unimportant in this fanciful film that certainly looks beautiful, but whose individual elements don’t coalesce into a satisfying whole. I admit I struggle with surrealism, but for me, this didn’t really amount to anything worth discussing, much less praising. My apologies – it was just forgettable.
