Wes Anderson seems to have misplaced his creative direction, and this movie demonstrates that. I understand that his distinctive filmmaking style isn't for everyone, and he has certainly created some good films in the past. However, this one doesn't measure up. In fact, despite what many are saying—claims that it’s supposedly his best work—I would argue quite the opposite; it might be his weakest effort so far, a rambling, obscure, unfocused piece that is so confusing you’ll probably need help just to figure out how to get through it (especially if you haven't already lost interest by the time the film finally ends). The director seems to have become overly absorbed in his own quirkiness, and he doesn’t even appear concerned about whether or not audiences are following along. It is true that this movie still manages to capture Anderson’s unique visual style with beautiful production design and striking cinematography. But that's really all it has going for it, which is a shame considering the talented actors involved. Despite his skill in creating an impressive aesthetic, he seems to have forgotten about combining it with something of substance—something meaningful or even engaging. The film’s lack of clarity and inclusion of random elements that feel like they’re there just because are significant drawbacks when trying to make something understandable. Basically, “Asteroid City” is another major letdown during what's shaping up to be a pretty bad summer for movies. It will probably only appeal to his most dedicated fans (and perhaps even not many of them this time). If you’re unsure about seeing it, consider these two signs: (1) when no one in the audience laughs at what is being presented as a comedy, that should tell you something (as was the case at the screening I went to); and (2) given how heavily the studio has been advertising this film on television and online, it’s clear they're working very hard to sell an inferior product. It’s a complete waste of time and money; don’t spend yours.
