I won't pretend that I didn't find some enjoyment in this film; it delivers action, touches on biblical themes, and incorporates science fiction elements. It proved to be a reasonably diverting experience. Still, I couldn’t shake a feeling of disappointment. The plot involves an unremarkable man who turns out to be related to an ancient warrior from a clandestine society of assassins tasked with safeguarding the apple of Eden. Because he bears a striking resemblance to his ancestor, he becomes a prime target for the villainous Knights Templar, who want to access supposed “genetic” memories that will lead them to the apple. I realize this requires a considerable suspension of disbelief, but it’s a fantasy/sci-fi movie based on a video game narrative, so some leeway is understandable. Speaking of the video game, I haven't played it and don’t know if the film adheres to its storyline—and perhaps that’s ultimately beneficial for this particular adaptation. What I struggled with was the idea that the apple supposedly holds the genetic blueprint for “free will.” That concept felt absurd on many levels! The movie features several well-executed action and fight sequences, though most of them are flashbacks depicting Callum's ancestor in action rather than Callum himself. It wasn’t until nearing the end that Callum finally begins to tap into his abilities and engage in some fighting during his own time, which I found a bit underwhelming. Ultimately, I left feeling somewhat let down. The movie progressed at an almost unhurried pace, punctuated by bursts of action in those flashback scenes. Very little genuinely captivated my attention beyond the fight choreography. The performances are acceptable but nothing special. When Callum finally starts performing assassin duties in the present day, it feels like too little, coming far too late. There’s a decent skirmish during their escape from the Knights Templar's facility, but the final confrontation between the two sides was rather lackluster.
