It’s surprisingly engaging as a drama, considering it was filmed with a single camera and a very limited budget in caves located in a remote part of Staffordshire. The story serves as an early version of the familiar Arthurian tales, focusing on a young man—currently named “Arthfael” (played by Kirk Barker)—who finds himself at odds with the unpleasant King "Vortigern" (David Sterne) and his assistant "Aberthol" (Nigel Cooke). These antagonists were responsible for his mother’s death and subsequently forced him into hiding within the forest. He has heard stories about the mythical “Myrrdin” (Stefan Butler), believing he might offer assistance and a chance at retribution. What follows is largely foreseeable, but instead of relying on numerous inexpensive visual effects, the production uses just a few blue lights (kept out of view) and occasionally amusing performances to suggest the mysticism, hypnotism, and wickedness of that era. There's likely an excess of dialogue; there are moments when you feel like telling the two protagonists to find some privacy, but by restricting itself to presenting something that doesn’t depend on resources it lacks, the film succeeds in a way similar to older television episodes of "Robin of Sherwood" and "Merlin." It probably won't stick with you afterward, though if you enjoy this type of story and its characters, there are definitely much poorer versions available.
