This movie, *Artemis Fowl*, is just not good. Aside from the music, there’s really very little to recommend it. The story itself is awful and badly presented, which is made worse by how earnestly it approaches its own material for a large portion of its 95 minutes. It drags in places, and the special effects are underwhelming. The actors don't do much to improve things. I’ve got nothing against Ferdia Shaw personally, but he doesn’t shine as the main character; I thought Lara McDonnell fared better as Holly. Josh Gad is an actor I generally enjoy, but his part here falls flat, and especially his narration feels awkward. Judi Dench's portrayal of Julius is grating, while Colin Farrell and Nonso Anozie feel like they aren’t utilized enough. It’s a significant disappointment, though it isn't the absolute worst film I've ever watched. The ending teases another installment, but considering how people have responded to this one, I doubt that will actually happen—it seems like something similar to what occurred with 2007’s *The Golden Compass*.
