During my recent class discussion about Disney missteps, “Artemis Fowl” came up as an example of a complete failure, directed by Kenneth Branagh. The studio seemed eager to get rid of it, releasing the film on Disney+ despite how little it warranted such placement. There's hardly any enchantment in this visually overloaded movie aimed at families; instead, it’s a tedious experience that fell far short of being the captivating story it clearly wanted to be. Adapted from the initial two books in Eoin Colfer’s well-loved children’s fantasy series, “Artemis Fowl” recounts the unremarkable tale of young criminal mastermind Artemis (Ferdia Shaw), an unpleasant child who kidnaps fierce fairy Holly Short (Lara McDonnell) from her hidden realm. His goal is to steal magical abilities to save his father (Colin Farrell). That's essentially all there is to the storyline, and it feels like a poorly executed imitation of “Harry Potter.” Even the story’s voice-over character, the large dwarf Mulch Diggums (Josh Gad), resembles Hagrid. The performances are mixed; some actors are grating and disruptive (Shaw, McDonnell) while others appear to have made questionable career choices by participating in this Disney production (Farrell, Gad, Judi Dench). As the movie continues, it just keeps getting worse, and when you think it couldn’t possibly get any more disappointing, a bizarre moment occurs where Diggums opens his mouth wide, quickly gathers dirt, and then eliminates it from his body. Honestly, I would have preferred to watch that scene repeatedly for the entire running time of 94 minutes instead of enduring this inferior product.
