The movie's visuals were a definite highlight, and Amy does an admirable job leading the ensemble. My tolerance for science fiction allows me to overlook plot points; I won’t nitpick about how things differ from reality. Initially, the film presents a fascinating premise centered on language, cultural differences, our understanding of the world, and what it would really be like encountering life from another planet. However, this promising foundation ultimately leads to a tired message that feels ancient, and then abandons any resolution to the science fiction storyline we'd been following. It’s disappointing because cancer is tragic enough in real life; now I’m left wondering what became of the aliens. Did they simply lose interest after witnessing the ending?
