It's disheartening when a movie starts with an interesting idea and then doesn’t quite live up to expectations. That’s the situation with director Matthew Vaughn’s newest film, which is described as an action-adventure/comedy about a novelist of spy stories (Bryce Dallas Howard) who unexpectedly finds herself in a real espionage situation mirroring the plot of her latest book, getting pulled into a complicated series of events involving various dangerous people. The core issue here is that the movie struggles to maintain a clear direction, which prevents it from fully succeeding. Some of the comedic moments are genuinely amusing, but they’re often slowed down by a wandering storyline attempting to follow a more standard thriller structure with unexpected twists. This leaves audiences wondering what exactly the film intends to be. There's also a noticeable amount of familiar material borrowed from other films, like plot elements previously seen in movies such as “Romancing the Stone” (1984), “The Long Kiss Goodnight” (1996) and numerous James Bond films. While it’s true that this release aims to be a parody of those titles—particularly in scenes with Henry Cavill playing a ridiculously over-the-top 007 imitation—there's a significant difference between honoring predecessors and blatantly copying them. The film’s excessive length is another problem, clocking in at 2:19:00, which feels much longer than necessary due to an often unnecessarily complex plot that can test the audience's patience, especially later on. “Argylle” also includes a cute cat named Alfie as a key character (at least according to the trailers), but like the story itself, the movie seems unsure how to handle the supposedly energetic and unpredictable feline, which is different from what’s shown in the promotional materials. It's unfortunate because this film has both promise and some apparent positive aspects, such as a good soundtrack, well-designed action sequences, and an impressive group of actors including Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Ariana DeBose, and a sadly underutilized Richard E. Grant, along with solid performances from Howard and Cavill portraying versions of each other. It isn't nearly as bad as some critics have suggested, but it could have been considerably better with some major revisions and careful editing. “Argylle” apparently has aspirations to launch a new series of films, but whether that happens will depend on how well it does at the box office. Right now, though, I believe it faces an uphill battle.
