Bryce Dallas Howard portrays Elly Conway, a writer of successful spy novels who resides in a secluded lakeside house. The ending of her fifth book confuses her mother, though. What’s next? It appears the answer lies in book six, but her mom (Catherine O'Hara) pushes for a visit to their parents—a decision that turns out to be mistake number one. During the train journey, she meets a somewhat disheveled man named Wilde (Sam Rockwell), who is reading one of her books. She attempts to conceal her identity, but when he checks the inside cover, her secret is revealed. Shortly after, this becomes the least significant issue as she and her traveling cat Alfie find themselves embroiled in a situation straight from the pages of her own novels! Elly can't imagine why anyone would target her, but her new acquaintance persuades her that there’s someone she needs to meet—and quickly she’s drawn into a fresh realm of mystery, intrigue, and peril. The film begins somewhat slowly, with an occasionally irritating back-and-forth between her everyday life and the worlds of her characters (which is where Henry Cavill appears in brief action sequences). However, once things become clear regarding who's who and what’s happening, it moves into "Man from U.N.C.L.E." territory, delivering a series of fast-paced adventures that, while not entirely original, offer some entertaining surprises as the story reaches an ending that feels familiar but remains quite enjoyable to watch. The initial premise is fairly unique, and although the film’s execution largely borrows elements from other Matthew Vaughn productions, it functions effectively despite its excessive length. Rockwell seems to be having a good time, and the cat mostly stays put throughout.
