I really didn’t expect to like this as much as I did. The film presents some genuinely frightening creatures, so each evening the father (Nicolas Cage) must secure his two sons, Joseph (Jaeden Martell) and Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins), and himself inside their house, relying on their defenses until daylight arrives. It's true that the premise isn’t groundbreaking, but it moves along at a good clip; Thomas's curiosity leads him too near these nighttime creatures, resulting in an injury to his father. Then Joseph—who constantly brought Dan Radcliffe to mind and seems to be the family’s most intelligent member—must devise some resourceful plans to ensure their survival. Cage isn't prominently featured, which is perhaps a positive thing, because the two boys and Charlotte (Sadie Soverall) do a commendable job of keeping things progressing at a brisk and fairly amusing pace for ninety minutes. The special effects aren’t spectacular, but the confined locations, frequent axe use, considerable digging, and even a chest freezer all contribute effectively. It's unlikely you’ll recall it afterward, and the connection to Arcadia remains unclear, yet as undemanding summer entertainment, it succeeds adequately.
