A photographer dies from a spider bite while working in Venezuela, and his remains are sent back to his hometown of Canaima, California. However, something travels with him inside the coffin… Combining elements of low-budget films with a contemporary sense of humor, Arachnophobia features direction by Frank Marshall and performances from Jeff Daniels, Julian Sands, John Goodman, and Harley Jane Kozak. It’s remarkable how few horror comedies have truly succeeded over time, especially those that manage to connect with an audience who appreciates both genres. Outside of movies like "Shaun of the Dead," there aren't many worthwhile creature features in this style, particularly now. While “Tremors” stands out as a standout success, along with “Lake Placid” and “Arachnophobia,” these films all earned significant money for their type and benefited from having recognizable actors involved. One advantage that Arachnophobia has is the widespread fear of spiders. As director Marshall mentioned during publicity events, audiences enjoy being frightened while also finding it amusing. The movie successfully achieves this balance, blending real spiders (the Avondale variety) with models and magnets to create a mix of nervous laughter and unsettling chills. The actors do their best to make the film entertaining. Sands’ performance is stiff, but his character's arrogance as an insect expert actually suits the role. Daniels, playing a doctor seeking a fresh start in rural life, delivers a strong lead performance; it remains puzzling why he hasn’t achieved greater recognition in Hollywood. However, John Goodman truly brings the fun of a classic "B" movie with his portrayal of Delbert, a large, cheerful, and somewhat clueless exterminator who embodies small-town American values. He's oblivious to the dangers around him, which creates an interesting contrast with Dr. Ross Jennings’ arachnophobia (played by Daniels). Filmed in Cambria, California, Arachnophobia effectively portrays a close-knit community under attack from spiders. It's a great comedy horror film that the whole family can enjoy. So, squirm and laugh together while keeping an eye out for any creepy crawlies lurking nearby... 7/10
