Following a death attributed to a spider bite, an expedition departs from Guam to examine a secluded island in the Pacific. Chris Potter portrays the mission’s head while Alex Reid takes on the role of pilot. “Arachnid” (2001) combines elements of an island adventure and horror, drawing inspiration from films like “Six Days Seven Nights” (1998) and “Welcome to the Jungle” (2013), but incorporating horror aspects similar to those found in “The Fly” (1986)—though it avoids being confined to a single location like that earlier film. The computer-generated imagery used at the beginning feels overly exaggerated, however, the physical effects throughout the remainder of the movie are impressive considering this wasn’t a major studio production (it apparently had a budget of just $570,000). It's better than "In the Spider's Web" (2007), though it doesn’t quite measure up to “Arachnophobia” (1990). I found the interactions among the stranded characters engaging and the difficulties presented by a sweltering jungle environment felt very real. Alex Reid delivers a solid performance for the female roles, and I appreciated her expressions. Neus Asensi, from Spain, also appears as Susana, an appealing and assertive character. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 35 minutes and was filmed in Catemaco, Veracruz, Mexico, and Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. GRADE: B-
