I recently got back from seeing Aquaman at the IMAX theater in Balexert, Geneva, and wanted to jot down my thoughts while they were still fresh. It doesn't often happen that I feel compelled to write about a movie right after seeing it. Overall, I really enjoyed watching this film. It’s definitely an impressive superhero spectacle with fantastic special effects, and it's quite visually appealing too. Many of the scenes set underwater are genuinely lovely to look at. I’m glad I made the effort to go to a theater and experience it on an IMAX screen. Though, some of the excitement surrounding it feels a little overblown; it doesn't quite reach the level of a true masterpiece. As for the story, well, it is a superhero movie after all, so if you’re expecting something deep, completely logical, or airtight, you might want to reconsider your expectations. That being said, the plot wasn’t bad at all. It was pretty straightforward and not overly complicated—a solid story suitable for an action/adventure film. I liked the heroes in the movie quite a bit. Jason Momoa as Aquaman really stood out. His intense stare before he starts fighting was just so… menacing. The writers did include some moments where his character had to act foolish, but generally, he came across as a good guy throughout the entire film. There wasn’t much whining, angst, or anti-hero behavior—things that have unfortunately ruined many of the Marvel TV shows lately. The villains weren't terrible either. Orm could have used more charisma as a bad guy, but Black Manta was radiating pure despicable villainy from beginning to end. I probably shouldn’t say this because his unusual helmet is faithful to the comics, but it just looks odd and perhaps better on the page than on screen. The special effects are pretty amazing throughout the film, and as I mentioned earlier, they're often beautiful too. The various creatures, underwater vehicles, and gadgets are really cool and well-designed. My only real complaint about the movie is the heavy-handed environmental messaging. Thankfully, it’s limited to a few scenes, but those moments feel very forced on the audience. A superhero film should be entertaining, not preachy. If I want that kind of thing, I can just watch the news. That's one point taken off in my estimation for that nonsense.
