Arthur Curry, played by Jason Momoa, resides with his father along the Maine coast, tending to a lighthouse. Through guidance from Vulko (Willem Dafoe) and information shared by Mera (Amber Heard), he learns that he’s part human and heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. As the rightful successor, he finds himself facing off against his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to prevent destruction of the land above. Simultaneously, Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) is after Arthur for what happened to his father. “Aquaman” (2018) is a vibrant superhero movie that includes an action set piece about every five minutes of calmer moments. It brings to mind “Thor” (2011) and “Thor: The Dark World” (2013), but instead of Asgard and its surrounding areas, the visuals showcase impressive underwater locations. However, the emotional depth was stronger in those earlier films; here, it seems like the filmmakers were eager to move onto the next action scene, which might make the film feel exciting, though not as strong from a narrative perspective. Despite this, the movie is packed with activity and has a lot of energy – possibly too much for its own benefit. I appreciated the way the underwater scenes blended with those on land, featuring impressive settings such as the Sahara Desert and Sicily. Amber Heard looks fantastic as Mera with her red hair. Nicole Kidman also appears in a role as Arthur’s mother, Atlanna. Regarding Arthur himself, Momoa is excellent in the lead role and will likely reshape how people generally view Aquaman. The movie runs for 2 hours and 23 minutes and was filmed in Australia (Hastings Point, Amity Point, Southport, Main Beach & Currumbin Beach), Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada, and Morocco (Erfoud & Merzouga). GRADE: B
