It seemed somewhat unfair to me that Silvio Berlusconi wasn't acknowledged in the credits, given how prominently he appears—both on television and through his public image! The film centers around the 1996 Italian elections as Nanni Moretti tries to weave together two key moments in his personal life. While the arrival of his child holds a bit more significance, it’s only marginally ahead of his intended documentary about those very elections. This documentary wasn't originally what he had in mind; he initially wanted to create a musical or some kind of variety show. But once he committed to this new direction, he found himself struggling with creative paralysis. The production team is ready to go, but his thoughts are stuck. He’s completely at a loss as he tries to manage competing demands. Being on the left side of the political spectrum also contributes to his disappointment regarding the state of politics in Italy... Essentially, he's caught between two difficult options. The film is odd and funny while also taking some jabs at people who seem ill-equipped for challenges related to fatherhood, politics, or filmmaking. The final few minutes feel a little too predictable in their strangeness, and Moretti does tend to dominate the screen, but the upbeat music and amusing conversations make for an agreeable, though ultimately unremarkable, eighty minutes of exasperated chaos.
