Wuchak on April Fool's Day

6/10 · Apr 16, 2021

This movie, “April Fool’s Day” (2008), isn't a remake of the earlier film with the same name; it functions more like an independent sequel, which is common for this type of horror movie. The story centers on individuals involved in a prank that goes terribly wrong at a debutante ball near Charlotte, and they find themselves being hunted by someone seeking them to confess their involvement. While some slasher enthusiasts dislike the film, I don’t think the original was all that remarkable either, even if it had moments worth appreciating. The initial party scene feels slow and detached from reality, but for the most part, it succeeds as a standard slasher flick. The plot twist works well, and there's an extra element thrown in too. People often criticize the characters as being difficult to like, but that’s pretty typical of this genre. Scout Taylor-Compton is memorable among the female cast members, and Taylor Cole does a good job portraying a privileged girl. Sabrina Aldridge plays the embarrassed person who was the focus of the prank, while Jennifer Siebel Newsom shows up as one of her friends, also a beauty pageant contestant. Mariesha Crews has a smaller role in the film. The movie’s length is 1 hour and 31 minutes, and filming took place in Charlotte and Monroe, North Carolina. I'd give it a B-.
